Sidney W. Ball Sr.

AMENIA — Sidney W. Ball Sr., 60, of Amenia passed away on Feb. 21, 2019, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. 

Sid, as he was known to all, was born on Aug. 16, 1958, in Sharon to Nancy and Gerald (Drum) Ball. 

Since the age of 14 Sid could be found working on many local farms, including the McEnroe Organic Farm.

When we moved to the area about 33 years ago, the Rodies, Bob and Polly and their little dog MacGregor, were pretty much the first people to welcome us. Settling in to Richard’s new job as director of the Housatonic Mental Health Center, helping our 7- and 10-year-olds adjust to a new school — all the things one has to do with a thousand-mile move — left little time to really get to know our neighbors.

James Durwood Ellis Sr.

MILLERTON — James Durwood Ellis Sr., 84, of Waddington, N.Y., and Millerton passed away on Feb. 13, 2019, at Vassar Bros. Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with his three sons at his side. 

He was born Feb. 9, 1935, the son of the late Grace and Carl Ellis of Waddington. 

In July 1952, he married Nora Wing, a marriage that lasted for 64-and-a-half years. Mrs. Ellis passed away on Jan. 26, 2017.

He worked in a milk factory at a very young age and he drove Uke trucks during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. 

Robert Paul Cooper

MILLERTON — Robert Paul Cooper, 83, a two-year resident of Sharon and a 49-year resident of Millerton, died peacefully on Feb. 22, 2019, at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation, surrounded by his loving family. 

Mr. Cooper was the founder of Associated Lightning Rod, a company that specializes in lightning protection on residential and commercial structures and is based in Millerton. It is a family business with more than 60 years and three generations of experience that continues today. He retired in 2002.

Virginia F. “Ginny” Jones

MILLERTON — Virginia F. “Ginny” Jones, 78, of DeLand, Fla., and formerly of Millerton, died Feb. 7, 2019, in DeLand.

Born Nov. 8, 1940, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Arleigh Milan and Harriet E. (Cummings) Frink. Ginny resided in Millerton until 2001,when she and her husband, Don, retired to Orange City, Fla.

On June 6, 1959, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., she married Donald J. Jones. Mr. Jones died April 9, 2013.

Laura Rietbrock Keswani

SALISBURY — Laura Rietbrock Keswani, 48, of New York City and Salisbury, passed away at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City on Feb. 6, 2019.

Laura was born on March 2,1970, in Morgantown,W. Va., to Dr. Michael Rietbrock and Daina Peterson. In 1972 the family moved to Oconomowoc, Wisc., where Laura spent her childhood and graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1988.

Lewis J. Pennell

NORFOLK — Lewis J. Pennell, 58, of Norfolk passed away with loved ones by his side on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Lew took nothing in life for granted, and will be remembered most for his kindness, dedication and generosity of spirit. 

Helen A. Riley

SHARON — Helen A. Riley, 84, a lifelong area resident, died peacefully on Feb.12,  2019, at her home in Sharon.  Helen worked for many years as an operating room technician at Sharon Hospital. She was also a homemaker and hospice volunteer for nearly 25 years in the Northwest Corner of Connecticut. 

John W. Horton

AMENIA – John W. Horton, 56, a lifelong area resident, died on Feb. 11, 2019, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 

John was a self-employed granite and marble fabricator specializing in custom countertops and tile. He was also a professional mason and built several homes throughout his career.

Born Oct. 27, 1962, in Sharon, he was the son of the late Benjamin D. and Dorothy J. (Brizzie) Horton Sr. John attended Webutuck High School. 

On July 9, 1983, in the Millerton Presbyterian Church he married Vicki Dean. 

John A. Bellantoni

MILLERTON — John A. Bellantoni, 97, a resident of Millerton for eight years and a longtime resident of the Bronx, N.Y., died Feb. 12, 2019, at Sharon Hospital. 

Mr. Bellantoni worked as a display and packing coordinator for Sotheby’s Auction House for many years and also worked as a machinist at a shoe factory where he belonged to the local Teamsters Union.
