Herbert Gilbert Day Jr.

MILLERTON — Herbert Gilbert Day Jr., 86, of Millerton, beloved husband of Evelyn (Silvernale) Day, passed away on March 22, 2019, from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease at Noble Horizons Nursing Home in Salisbury, surrounded by his loving family. 

Born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Oct. 10, 1932, he was the son of the late Blanche (Seaman) and Herbert Day.

Herbert graduated from the Oak Wood School in Poughkeepsie and completed a degree in photography at RIT in Rochester, N.Y.

Caroline Ann (Swenson) Paton

SHARON — Caroline Ann (Swenson) Paton, 86, of Sharon died on March 18, 2019. She was born on Aug. 31, 1932.

She was a singer of traditional and contemporary folk songs with a bright, beautiful voice, an amazing recall of lyrics and a talent for harmony. She would often sing a cappella or accompany herself on the Appalachian dulcimer or the autoharp. 

Janette Adaline Finkle

PINE PLAINS — Janette Adaline Finkle, 89, a long-time resident of Pine Plains, died on March 28, 2019, at the Regional Hospice in Danbury, Conn. She had been living with her daughter and family in Bethel, Conn., for the past three years.

Mrs. Finkle was born March 7, 1930,  in South Attleboro, Mass., the daughter of the late Omer Charpentier and Ethel (Charpentier) Wheeler. 

Richard E. Valentine

CRARYVILLE, N.Y.  —  Richard E. Valentine, 89, passed away on March 17, 2019, at Kimball Farms in Lenox, Mass.

He was born on April 6, 1929, in Bronx, N.Y., the son of Agnes (Kaminski) and Edward Valentine.

He proudly served his country with the United States Army.

Richard was a manager for IBM in Fishkill, N.Y.

He was a longtime member of the Craryville Fire Company, well into his 80s.  He also enjoyed driving new cars for dealerships.  

Mary Elizabeth Manning

LAKEVILLE — Mary Elizabeth Manning, 85, a lifelong area resident, died peacefully on March 15, 2019, at Hartford Hospital following a brief illness. 

Mary worked for many years as a bookkeeper for The Woodland Restaurant in Lakeville  and for the Shell gas station in Lakeville prior to her retirement in 2000.

Born July 1, 1933, in Sharon, she was the daughter of the late Mary H. (McLain) and George E. Barton. She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School. 

Marian A. Doyle

PINE PLAINS — Marian A. Doyle, 97, passed away on March 11, 2019, at Sharon Health Care Center.

She was born on March 19, 1921,  in Pine Plains, the daughter of Anna (Gunther) and Arthur Adams.

Marian was an insurance agent for Stissing Insurance Co. in Pine Plains.

She enjoyed painting, sewing, knitting, needlepoint and crocheting. 

She was a past member of the Pine Plains Ladies Auxiliary.

Timothy Allan Swart

PINE PLAINS — Timothy Allan Swart passed away the evening of March 9, 2019, surrounded by family, at the age of 61. 

He was born on March 22, 1957, the son of Helen and Donald Swart, and was raised in Pine Plains. 

Tim was a lifelong caregiver, having worked for the Wassaic developmental center and the Red Hook Day Habilitation Center from 1976 until his retirement in 2012. Throughout his tenure and after, he was highly regarded as a beloved caregiver, co-worker and friend. 

Marjorie Anne LaMarque

NORTH CANAAN — Marjorie Anne LaMarque, née McCunn, 90, of Beckley House in North Canaan, passed away peacefully March 3, 2019, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington after a brief illness. She was attended by family members. 

Formerly of Topsham, Maine, Salem, S.C., Greenwich, Conn., and Rye, N.Y., Marjorie was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Feb. 28, 1929, and grew up in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., where the family moved in 1930. 

She was predeceased by her husband, John C. LaMarque; and her daughter, Allison. 

Robert C. Judge

CORNWALL BRIDGE — Robert C. Judge, 90, died at home surrounded by family on March 2, 2019.

Bob was born in Brockton, Mass., on May 31, 1928, to Nora (Shinnick) and Thomas E. Judge.

He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1950 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. During the junior prom with Regis College, he saw Mary Lou Gallagher across the room and asked her to dance. She was on the planning board for the dance and he was in charge of hiring a big band for the event. They married two years later and began their journey together.

Richard Allen Couch

NORTH CANAAN — Richard Allen Couch of North Canaan and formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., died at home on Feb. 15, 2019. He was 80.  

Dick was born in Bremerton, Wash., on April 4, 1938, to Harriet Frances (Gilmor) and  Richard Bailey  Couch. 

His family moved to Bethesda, Md., where his father became the chief naval architect of the United States, and later to Ann Arbor, Mich.
