Twenty-eight years ago, a Tacoma, Wash., colorectal surgeon decided to take action in the fight against cancer. He ran and walked on a local track for 24 hours, covering 83 miles. Friends and colleagues made donations if they wanted to join him for a lap. Dr. Gordon Klatt raised $27,000 — and raised awareness as well. Inspired by his example, the American Cancer Society launched Relay for Life the very next year.
