WEBUTUCK — Through its Social Justice Committee and President Rebecca Garrard, the Webutuck Teachers’ Association (WTA) was recently presented with the prestigious Ken Kurzweil Social Justice Recognition Award.

Webutuck’s month of reading focus is outer space

WEBUTUCK — Space is the place to be if you’re a student (or teacher) at Webutuck Elementary School: the PARP (People as Reading Partners) reading initiative kicked off this month with the typical bang known as Theme Day.
For the past six years, the PARP program has encouraged children to read for at least 15 minutes each day with their parents. Each Friday for the entire month of March, the students bring in their checklist, certifying that they have met that reading quota at least five of the past seven days.

From Baghdad to Webutuck

WEBUTUCK — Red Hook native Shawn Conway only had two weeks home after a year and a half on tour in Baghdad, Iraq, but he chose to spend some of it in a Webutuck classroom.
Conway, 21, is the nephew of fourth-grade teacher Denise Conway, who teaches at Eugene Brooks Intermediate School. He made the trek to Webutuck on Feb. 17, a little less than a week after arriving stateside.
Conway, as he explained to his aunt’s students, is a truck driver for the United States Army in Iraq. He helps close out bases as the United States continues to pull out troops from the Middle East.
