MILLERTON — With the coming of autumn, it’s a perfect time for crafters of all varieties to start to plan new projects, which means it’s also a great time to think about creating something special for the  NorthEast-Millerton Library Holiday Craft Fair.

Library Director Rhiannon Leo-Jameson notes that because the event features only hand crafted items donated for the sale, no commercial vendors need be paid, so every cent that comes in contributes to the support of the library and its myriad of programs.

Meeting dates set for 2019-20 budget process

MILLERTON — The Village Board utilized part of its meeting on Monday, March 25, to reviewing the budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year, marking the calendar with dates.
The board went over the budget line-by-line to determine what could be trimmed while making sure it has the funds necessary for running the village. In order to stay below the allowed tax cap of 2 percent, the board had to reduce the budget’s contingency line from $12,000 to $5,235.

Volunteers needed to spruce up Rail Trail

MILLERTON -— Spending a sunny day walking or bicycling on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail can be a great way to pass the time, but sometimes Mother Nature needs a little hand for the adventure to go well. 
Fortunately, a number of good Samaritans — more of whom will be needed on April 13 — have already begun the work that will ensure the experience is the best that it can be.

Eco Challenge eco events

MILLERTON — Townscape is offering an Eco Challenge through Friday, April 12. Pick up a tabulation booklet at any Main Street merchant or log onto www.millertonecochallenge.com. The login code is “ecosite.” Keep a daily record of plastic use. Check a box under each heading for each item used.
Turn in the results at the free movie, “The Human Element,” at The Moviehouse on Sunday, April 14, at 11 a.m., or at any Main Street store.
Total results to be published on Earth Day, April 22, at the website mentioned above.

Full STEAM ahead

The STEAM Club took off at the NorthEast-Millerton Library on Friday, March 29, as teacher Lynn Buckley taught five young readers about the science behind flying with Simple Planes. After learning more about how things fly and Newton’s Laws of Motion, they crafted different types of airplanes out of paper and paperclips before testing which ones would fly the farthest, longest and most precise distance.

Community Conversation: Housing talk scheduled for April 12

MILLERTON — Come Friday, April 12, the North East Community Center (NECC) in Millerton will partner with Hudson River Housing to host a Community Conversation on “Housing: A Key to a Strong Local Community.”
Designed as a regional approach for rural communities such as the towns of North East, Amenia and Pine Plains, the Community Conversation will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Post 178 building, located at 155 Route 44 in Millerton.
