Mold in Alden Place Elementary School mars opening day

MILLBROOK— School buses pulled into the entrances of the four Millbrook schools on Thursday, Sept. 6, filled with children who were looking forward to meeting old friends, new teachers and beginning a new school year. But the third-, fourth- and fifth-graders who attend Alden Place Elementary School were disappointed. Mold was discovered the first day and the school had to be shut down.

Judith Muir speaks at monthly Millbrook Rotary luncheon

MILLBROOK — The Rotary luncheon meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 22, not only featured a meal at Copperfields Restaurant, but a presentation by Judith Muir, and a short but sweet group singalong with the lilting words and tune of “Sweet Adeline.”
Muir, a widely renowned musician who is also an educator, works her magic at The Institute for Music and Health (IMH).At the Institute, she is director of programs. Her many years of teaching — more than 40 to be exact — enables her to teach students and help them achieve great success in their endeavors.

Millbrook to update Comprehensive Plan

MILLBROOK— “A comprehensive plan is an expression of goals and recommended actions to achieve those goals, according to the New York State Comprehensive Plan Development, A Guidebook for Local Officials, 2015. The plan guides “the development of government structure as well as natural and built environment,” with roughly a 10- to 15-year outlook.

BOE talks about goals, planning and safety

MILLBROOK— A new year will be starting soon at the Millbrook Central School District, and there will be several changes and new practices put into play.
Many of those issues were discussed at the Board of Education (BOE) meeting last week. 
A contract with the Altaris Capital Partners, LLC was discussed, expected to impact the safety and security of all four schools.

Discussing human rights in Millbrook

MILLBROOK — Lunch at Lyall Church on Thursdays not only provides fellowship and wholesome food, some days it offers more. Thursday, Aug. 23, was one such day. 
Jody Miller, commissioner and EEO of the Dutchess County Commission on Human Rights, was there to talk with the guests about Millbrook and its human rights track record. It was one of the commission’s listening sessions, held at towns throughout the county to learn about community members’ concerns on discrimination and human rights.

Julien’s — A pizza by any other name…

MILLBROOK — The building at 5 Washington Ave., Millbrook, was vacant only a few short months before Rocco’s became Julien’s — and the pizza ovens were turned back on. But, as new owners Jean Paul Plant and his wife, Kay Vanderlyn, are quick to point out, this is a whole new restaurant.
Both trained at the Culinary Institute of America; their menu is varied. Named after their son, Julien, they offer much more than standard Italian fare.

Board talks about tariffs and their impact, meeting protocol

MILLBROOK — The Tuesday, Aug. 14, meeting of the Village Board opened at 6:30 p.m. 
Mayor Rodney Brown announced that due to the larger-than-usual audience, public comments would be limited to three minutes per person. 
Two donations were reported from the Millbrook Tribute Gardens, one for $15,000 was deposited in the ambulance reserve fund and one for $30,000 was deposited in the Millbrook restoration fund.

MILLBROOK— For antique lovers, serious collectors and people who just love to hunt for the unusual, the new Millbrook Auction Center may be just what the doctor ordered.
Located at 3788 Route 44, at the Arrowsmith Forge, Millbrook Auction Center is the creation of Tom McGeady, owner of the Millbrook Antique Center, and his partner, Rich Del Valle. Life-long friends, the idea was born out of the love they share for antiques.
