Voters pass library proposition

AMENIA— Along with voting for state and county officials, Amenia voters supported their local library this Election Day by casting their ballots in favor of a $30,000 funding proposition on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

The proposition marks an increase of $30,000 in the town’s annual contribution to the Amenia Free Library, bringing it to $125,000. In addition to directly influencing and sustaining the library’s operational budget, the increase will allow the library to host additional programs for the community, provide more resources, supply minor upgrades to the public...

Town Board mulls block grant ideas

AMENIA — The Amenia Town Board considered its options for next year’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) at a public hearing held on Thursday, Sept. 6.
Funded by the federal government, the CDBG program is designed to assist with the development of projects that primarily benefit low and moderate-income residents. Amenia is a member of the 2019 CDBG Urban County Consortium, making it eligible for the grant dollars.

AMENIA— Tucked away amid the rolling hills on the border of Amenia and Millbrook sits a farm that houses horses, chickens, a goat, a donkey, a cat and two cows. But the really important residents of this sprawling farm are dogs: pit-bulls, pit bull mixes and dogs that could potentially have pit bull in their pedigree. They all live at Animal Farm Foundation. Many are trained there to take care of others. None of the people or organizations that receive the trained dogs are charged a fee.

ZBA sets date for Kent Hollow Mine public hearing

AMENIA — With the development of the Kent Hollow Mine application underway, the Amenia Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) discussed organizing a public hearing. The board met on Monday, Aug. 20; all ZBA members were present except save Chairman Jeff Barnett-Winsby.
Following a recap of where the ZBA stood in relation to the Kent Hollow Mine application, ZBA attorney George Lithco said a public hearing would present the public with an opportunity to provide more information for the appeal.

The Amenia Free Library teamed up with The Wassaic Project on Saturday, Aug. 25, for a color theory workshop. It featured artist Elizabeth Allen-Cannon, who spoke about the basic concepts of color and art. The workshop marked a successful first collaboration between the library and The Wassaic Project that Library Director Erika Palombo hopes to expand into a monthly program. AMENIA — In 2019, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and Amenia’s Congregation Beth David will celebrate their 90th anniversaries, both institutions having been founded in 1929. 
Ann Temkin is the Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and the granddaughter of founding members of the Amenia synagogue.
