In the aftermath of the decision taken by the North Canaan Planning and Zoning commission (P&Z) at their meeting on Monday, Sept. 9, the town’s zoning enforcement officer submitted her resignation to First Selectman Charles Perotti.

Richelle Hodza had served the town for less than a year as zoning enforcement officer and land use administrator.

Jack Brown 4-H Fair begins the ag fair season

Busy Farmers 4-H Club members got a chance to practice their skills at showing cattle and other animals at the annual Jack Brown Fair, held on the grounds of the North Canaan Congregational Church on Sunday, July 28. The young farmers in this photo are taking part in the Showmanship competition. The fair is always the first of the seasonal area agriculture shows.

As Railroad Days ends, firemen march through North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — One of the last remaining annual firefighters’ parades in the Northwest Corner was held on the closing weekend of the 55th Railroad Days celebration on Saturday, July 27. 
The streets of downtown North Canaan were lined with families in beach chairs and summer outfits as the parade began. Marshall Miles, co-owner of Robin Hood Radio, announced the fire departments through a speaker as they drove and marched past.

Family Fun Night fun for all

NORTH CANAAN — The Railroad Days celebration continued in North Canaan with Family Fun Night on Thursday, July 25, at Lawrence Field. 
Despite the large variety of sugary treats that were served up, right at the entrance to the field, most of the stations and games promoted outdoor play and a healthy lifestyle.

Finding ways to lure doctors to rural regions

NORTH CANAAN — The Foundation for Community Health hosted a lunch session at Geer Village on Friday, July 26. 
The lunch was a wrap-up session following  a two-week summer program in which medical students shadowed health-care practitioners in the Tri-state region. 
The purpose of the program was to introduce the students to the challenges and  rewards of practicing medicine in a rural area, and to consider a career in Litchfield or Dutchess County, where there has been a shortage of doctors.

NORTH CANAAN — Railroad Days celebrations are in full swing, for the 55th year. The festival includes fireworks, fire truck rides, raffles, lots of food, music, crafts and activities geared toward families. 
The carnival in the first week of the townwide celebration is a favorite part of Railroad Days, and attracted many on the evening of Thursday, July 18, after being rained out the previous day.

Knights Templar acquire church in North Canaan

NORTH CANAAN — What was formerly Christ Episcopal Church in North Canaan is now the home of the OSMTJ Knights Templar. 
“OSMTJ” is the French acronym for Ordre Souverain et Militaire du Temple de Jérusalem or The Supreme Military Order of the Jerusalem Temple.

Continuity and change for North Canaan Railroad Days

NORTH CANAAN — The 55th annual Canaan Railroad Days will be held from July 17 to 28. For many North Canaan residents, this festival is the highlight of summer in the Northwest Corner.
Major events this year will include the Canaan Carnival, a party at the town pool, and trivia at the Great Falls Brewing Company. 
Some past events, such as fireworks and performances by the Salisbury Band, continue to be Railroad Days mainstays.
