A new look at Kent Falls

KENT — For several months, passersby have looked longingly at Kent Falls, eager for the day when it would reopen. It had been closed since March 18, when renovations on the parking lot commenced. On May 9, barriers were removed and visitors were greeted by a graceful new entrance to the state park.

The changes are evident as soon as one enters the parking lot. By following the arrows on the newly paved lot, cars are guided immediately to the right and then back to the left, bringing them to the admissions booth. In the past, cars have been lined up...

No one around here asks, ‘Who’s Seth MacFarlane?’

From Kent to Hollywood
asherp@lakevillejournal.com

KENT — When they tuned in to the Academy Awards this year, many people asked, “Who’s Seth MacFarlane?” In Kent, no one had to ask that question of the young man who left his hometown of Kent and headed west to begin a successful career in Hollywood as an actor, animator, screenwriter, comedian, producer, director, singer — and, this year, Academy Awards host.

Craft beer, Asian specials, burgers now on tap

asherp@lakevillejournal.com

KENT — The Kingsley Tavern has opened on Main Street (Route 7) in the space most recently occupied by the Millstone Café.
Owner Anna Gowan is not a newcomer to the restaurant business or to Kent. She has been a restaurant manager in Key West, Fla., and worked in the field up and down the East Coast, from Maine to Florida. She also worked as an environmental lobbyist in Washington, D.C.
But she felt it was time to come back home and open a place of her own. The new eatery very much honors her roots here.

Garrity outlines budget process

asherp@lakevillejournal.com

KENT — The annual “budget season” has begun. Boards of education and selectmen, as well as other town boards and commissions, are meeting to prepare their spending plans for the 2013-14 fiscal year, which begins on July 1, 2013.
Especially at the end of the season, when budgets are voted on at town meetings, people sometimes express frustration because they think the bottom line is too high or because items they think are important didn’t get enough funding.

Grand list and top 10 taxpayers

asherp@lakevillejournal.com

KENT — The assessor’s office has released the 2012 grand list.
The town of Kent presents the gross numbers for 2012, but shows net numbers for 2011. Gross numbers are before residents’ appeals of assessments. Net numbers reflect totals after the assessor makes adjustments to assessments based on the appeals. Therefore, while the 2012 gross numbers and 2011 net numbers are generally close, they present a less than perfect comparison.
