BARKHAMSTED — Fishermen young and old came out at dawn to participate in the 69th annual Riverton Fishing Derby, held on Saturday, April 14, the first day of general regulations fishing in Connecticut. Riverton is a historic district in the town of Barkhamsted.

The weather on April 14 was mild and warm, in the mid-50s.

Hundreds of people lined up along the Farmington River at 4 a.m., to both fish and to watch the fishermen.

“The opening day of the fishing season always gets people pumped up,” co-organizer Steve Scanlon said.
